Flat Paint may also be known as Matte Finish. Flat paint had the lowest sheen available in paint types. Once flat paint dries it is almost non-reflective. This is a great quality if you are wanting to cover imperfections in your wall, sanding or painting ability. It leaves a smooth matte finish like paper. Touching up marks, scratches and imperfections after the wall has been painted are also much easier with flat paint, as new coats of paint blend in well with the surface. Recommended for walls and ceilings.
Flat paint offers a wonderful depth of colour also. Colours appear darker and richer Richness to the matte finish that brings out the colour well. Flat paint may require a number of coats for an even finish.
Difficult to clean. Marks easily. One of the big disadvantages to flat paint is that it is hard to clean. Because of its somewhat porous texture, the paint can hold onto dirt and make cleaning more difficult. Your best bet is to use it in areas that are not frequently soiled.
More durable than flat, Eggshell has a slight sheen or Low Sheen. Always check the exact finish because the degree of sheen varies between manufacturers. It is most commonly used on interior wood surfaces as an alternative to semi-gloss, although some manufacturers will specify that the paint may be used on exterior surfaces. Eggshell can also be used on wall surfaces where a hardwearing finish is required as it is easier to clean. Two coats will usually give an even colour; use primer and first coat as required.
Semi-gloss paint is a popular choice in homes with young children living in them. This is because it is relatively easy to clean, while also being easy to touch up nicks and scratches in the walls. Gloss paint is the easiest to paint, but it is also the hardest paint to spot repair if there is any damage to the surface.
Semi-Gloss Paint is also a popular choice for children’s bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms as it copes well with humid and wet areas.
Semi -gloss paints does show a lot of the imperfections in your walls, but not as badly as the Gloss does. It does not draw as much attention as Gloss paint, so it can be used in large areas and on walls.
Gloss paint has the highest sheen available in paint types. It is the shiniest kind of paint you can buy as it is the most reflective. Gloss paint, also known as Satin Paint is the toughest and most durable paint type. It’s a great paint to use on doors and door frames as they tend to be high traffic areas, with loads of finger and hand prints. Gloss paint is the easiest paint to clean.
Colour with Gloss Paint does not look as rich and more likely to look lighter and brighter than the swatches as the paint reflects the light from windows and light fittings.
Because of it’s highly reflective surface, gloss paint is very unforgiving on rough surfaces and walls that have not been prepared well. Also, if you are not a very experienced painter, gloss paint can highly every one of your flaws.

For Cutting in and doing detailed work on the walls and doors, this brush and paint holder is a great idea. Cut from a milk bottle, this is a great way to take a small amount of paint with you as you go. Tin foil is an excellent way to keep brushes and rollers from drying out during painting breaks. Even leaving your brushes for 30 minutes while you get some food can ruin the finer bristles and make rollers rough and hard to use. For spray painting small items such as drawhandles and hinges, a cardboard box can be a great way to contain the mess. Also, by hanging the small item from the top of the box you can get an even coating over the whole thing in one go.
I love this idea for painting chairs and stools. All you need is a nail in the feet of the stool to hold it up off the paper while you paint. So many times I have painted furniture only to have the legs stick to the paper. This is a classic, putting paint rollers into Pringle containers to keep them moist overnight. Paint rollers hold a lot of paint and washing them out every night uses a lot of water. This is a great way to save time and resources.
Tin foil again can save the day. If you don’t have any tape to mask decorative items, why not cover them in tin foil to make sure they don’t get covered in paint. Easy.

Have you heard the story about the Brown Spider house in America? If not for any other reason – this house should be a warning to us all to get a pest inspection before you buy a new house.
The story goes like this. A young couple in Missouri, purchase a new home. They move in to what they believe will be their dream home, only to find there are a few spiders living within the walls. After a few months of living with the spiders, they start to notice that the spiders are literally bleeding out of the walls. Spiders are falling on them in the shower, coming up out of the couch cushions, falling from the light fittings and shedding their creepy little skins all over the house.
This was more than four years ago, and the couple have since not been able to live in their home. The entire house has been covered in a circus tent, and been pumped full of pesticide and insecticide and still they cannot get rid of the infestation. The couple have filed a law suit against the previous owners for not disclosing the spider infestation before they sold the home. But whose fault is this anyway? Wasn’t it up to the new owners to make sure they were getting their monies worth?
