You will need to hire a steam cleaner, and most machines will you need you to go over your carpets twice, to get all the benefits of steam cleaning.

1. Move All Furniture & Pick up rugs
Make sure your carpet is easy to get to. All the corners of the room need to be accessible. This will ensure you clean your carpet evenly. If you are going to go to all the effort of cleaning your own carpets, make sure you do it right.
2. Vacuum Your Carpet
Give your carpet a thorough vacuum before you begin. Take your time with this. Vacuuming works better when you go slow, and cover the same carpet a few times. Check your vacuum bag and the filter is clean and the bristles are free of hair and dust.
Take this time to pay attention to any spot stains that might need to be cleaned before you begin.
3. Spot Cleaning Your Carpets
Now is the time to spot clean all those little stains you found while vacuuming. Before you take out the carpet steamer, you need to get all those little spots out of the carpet. Don’t scrub or rub small stains in your carpet. Instead, make sure you blot at the stains to lift them straight up without spreading the stain.
- For Wax – Use a hot iron and a rag to melt the wax and draw it up from the carpet.
- For Chewing Gum – Use a few cubes of ice to freeze the gum before pulling or gently cutting it out of the carpet.
- For Grease – Use dishwashing liquid, it is specially designed to break down grease.

Hire a steam cleaning machine. Each machine is different, so you will need to follow the manufacturing specifications of the machine you hired. But here are tips you need to get a great finish.
Go slowly, really slowly. Don’t just rush the handle over your carpet and hope for the best. Give the product time to work through the carpet fibres.
Twice over, almost every machine will ask you to steam clean your carpets twice. Each time, it will ask you to use a different amount of product. The first time you go over your carpet you will need a lot of cleaning product. The second time you go over your carpet, it is more of a washout.
